What Is The Opportunity?
We are looking for an engineering manager to guide our clients growing development team. Partnering with HR, you will help recruit strong developers and nurture a collaborative team environment. Your passion for mentorship will guide your direct supervision of the development team, including performance management and professional development. Where it makes sense, especially while the team is small, we may expect you to write code, but this is not to be mistaken for a hands on development role. As the team grows, you will need to know how and when to take yourself off the critical path. You will report to our clients VP of engineering, and partner with them to ensure the team has what it needs to be successful.
The product?
From a technical perspective, our client is developing an intelligence analysis platform to support our analysts. The platform consists of a React web UI, Python Flask apps running in containers, and a modern data architecture, all of which rely on a number of AWS and external APIs and services. You will draw on your experience with these technologies to support, teach, and mentor your team to implement their architects' plans. Where you have gaps, you will lean on your proven track record of quickly coming up to speed on technologies.
How will you work?
Our client work in Agile Scrum and you will work closely with a scrum master. On a daily basis, you will work with their product owner, technical architect, and scrum master to translate business and technical requirements into increments of value.
Your responsibilities?
- Taking weekly 1-2-1’s with developers.
- Mentoring developers including establishing and tracking goals.
- Conducting performance reviews, assigning raises and bonuses, and addressing disciplinary matters as needed.
- Leading developer hiring for your team including writing job descriptions, triaging CVs, and conducting interviews.
- Ensuring team processes are followed for code review, code quality, testing, documentation, and so on.
- Participating in backlog refinement and sprint planning to help developers translate business and technical requirements into increments of value.
- Supporting developers who are stuck with technical problems.
- Performing code reviews and managing pull requests as necessary.
